Introduction about the Institute of Research and Development

Institute of Advanced Technology Research and Development

The Institute of Advanced Technology Research and Development was established by Decision No. 228/QĐ-ĐHDT dated January 18, 2014, based on the upgrade of the Research and Development Center (established on August 22, 2011). It is a pioneering research unit in the fields of natural sciences, technology, and engineering. In addition to conducting scientific research and innovation activities, the Institute also undertakes training and capacity-building tasks, particularly postgraduate training.

Since its establishment, the Institute has attracted a team of researchers holding doctoral degrees from prestigious universities worldwide in countries with advanced education systems, such as the United States, Russia, France, Germany, Canada, South Korea, Belgium, Japan, and others. The Institute's current staff comprises 50 members, including 8 Associate Professors, 36 PhDs, and 6 postgraduate researchers and master’s degree holders (6 of whom are foreign researchers working at the Institute). Organizationally, the Institute consists of four affiliated centers:

  • Center for Materials Science
  • Center for Advanced Chemistry
  • Duy Tan Computational Chemistry Center
  • Center for Mathematics - Mechanics - Informatics

These specialized units directly carry out the research and teaching duties in accordance with the Institute's functions.

In parallel with recruiting highly qualified researchers, the university has continuously invested in modern laboratories and facilities for the Institute to conduct research. These include the Spectroscopy Laboratory, the Advanced Chemistry Laboratory, and a high-performance computing system for numerical calculations and simulations.

Over the more than 10 years since its establishment, the Institute's staff have undertaken 44 research projects, including 37 fundamental research projects funded by the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED). With a team of highly skilled researchers and excellent research facilities, the Institute has published over 1,300 papers in journals indexed in the Web of Science. Notably, many works have been published in prestigious journals listed in the Nature Index (e.g., Applied Physics Letters, Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters) or journals with very high Impact Factors (IF) such as Advanced Functional Materials (IF = 27.9), Advanced Energy Materials (IF = 27.8), Journal of the American Chemical Society (IF = 15.0), Physical Review X (IF = 12.5), and Advanced Science (IF = 15.1).

With outstanding research achievements, the Institute's staff have received numerous well-deserved accolades. Notable examples include awards from the Chairman of Da Nang City People's Committee for excellence in scientific and technological activities. Dr. Hoang Nhat Duc has been consistently listed among the top 10,000 leading scientists globally. Dr. Phan Van Nham (in 2014) and Dr. Tran Hoai Nam (in 2016) were awarded the Young Researcher Award by the Vietnamese Theoretical Physics Society. Dr. Tran Ba Quoc received the Outstanding Prize of the National Research and Technology Awards of Thailand, presented by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation of Thailand in 2023. Dr. Ho Khac Hieu was the youngest educator recognized as an Associate Professor in 2015, while Dr. Ho Van Tuyen was the youngest educator recognized as an Associate Professor in 2022 in the field of Physics.
